VSP Louisville provides emergency and urgent care every day until 10 PM. We don’t hospitalize overnight, so this page explains what to do if your pet gets sick or hurt after we close or on a holiday, and how we hand pets off when they need care through the night. If it’s before 10 PM, skip the reading and come straight to us at 11600 Main Street, Louisville, KY 40243, or call (502) 901-7990.
Our Hours
We’re open Monday through Friday from 9 AM to 10 PM and Saturday and Sunday from 8 AM to 10 PM. Walk in, no appointment needed, or reserve your spot online. We’re closed on New Year’s Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas.
If Your Pet Has an Emergency After 10 PM
Go to the nearest 24 hour emergency hospital. Don’t wait for morning if your pet is having trouble breathing, has collapsed, is bleeding heavily, has had a seizure that won’t stop, has eaten something toxic, is straining to urinate with nothing coming out, or has a swollen belly and keeps trying to vomit. Our guide to emergency vs. urgent care lists more of the signs that can’t wait.
A few things make the trip go faster. Call the hospital on the way so they know you’re coming. Bring your pet’s medications, and if they ate something they shouldn’t have, bring the package or label. If your pet has been seen at VSP or by your family veterinarian recently, mention it so the hospital can ask for records.
It also helps to look up the 24 hour emergency hospital closest to your home today and save its number in your phone. Late at night, that’s one less thing to figure out.
If You’re Not Sure It Can Wait
Many emergencies start quietly. A pet who is suddenly hiding, panting at rest, refusing food or acting “not right” may be sicker than they look. If you’re asking yourself whether it can wait until morning, it’s usually safer to have your pet seen tonight. Our post on whether to go to the emergency vet or wait until morning can help you think it through.
If Your Pet Is With Us When We Close
If your pet needs care overnight or intensive monitoring, we don’t simply send you somewhere else. We stabilize your pet, begin the right diagnostics, collect pretreatment samples and speak directly with a trusted 24 hour hospital before the transfer. Records go with your pet, so the overnight team picks up where we left off instead of starting over. When your pet is ready to leave the overnight hospital, they can come back to VSP the next morning for continued care.
The Next Morning
We open at 9 AM on weekdays and 8 AM on weekends. If your pet was seen somewhere overnight and still needs care, you’re welcome to come in or call (502) 901-7990. Our ER doctors are backed by board certified specialists on call to assist remotely, and if your pet needs a specialist, we’ll book a specialty appointment for you.
Holidays
We close on New Year’s Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas so our team can be with their families. On those days, go to the nearest 24 hour emergency hospital if your pet needs help.
Holidays bring their own risks, from rich food and chocolate to tinsel, ribbon and toxic plants. A little planning helps. Refill your pet’s medications ahead of time through our online pharmacy, keep treats and table scraps out of reach, and know where your nearest 24 hour hospital is before the day arrives.
